The dark side of neurodivergence
What do the official criteria stay silent about?
In popular psychology, convenient but flat stereotypes have taken shape:
- ADHD — “forgot my keys again and grabbing at everything at once.”
- ASD — “a weird genius who doesn’t make eye contact.”
But if we look behind the scenes of real life, the picture changes:
🧠 ADHD is прежде всего executive dysfunction. It’s when you’ve needed to use the bathroom for 3 hours, but physically can’t tear yourself away from what you’re doing. Or you spend 3 hours on a 15-minute task because your thoughts scatter like mercury. And, of course, it’s total emotional dysregulation.
🧠 ASD is not just social awkwardness. It’s sensory overload, when the music in a café causes almost physical pain, and rigidity, when a yogurt moved to a different shelf can trigger an emotional meltdown.
Two “horsemen of the Apocalypse”
In therapy, we often see phenomena that interfere with life far more than the “official” symptoms, yet they are rarely talked about.
1️⃣ ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)
A frequent companion of ADHD (up to 60% of cases). In textbooks, this is described as “loss of self-control” and “rejection of authority.”
In real life, it looks like this: Your brain says “NO” simply for the sake of conflict. You argue with your boss not because you’re right, but because you physically cannot give way. Other people see a “bad character,” while inside you are burning up with guilt over your aggression, yet in the moment you are completely powerless.
2️⃣ PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance)
This is when the brain says “NO” because of a panicked fear of losing control.
In real life, it looks like this: A critical need for autonomy becomes paralyzing. You cannot do even the things you want yourself to do (eat, go to bed, engage in a hobby). As soon as a desire takes the form of the thought “I HAVE TO”, it is instantly recognized by the brain as a threat — and the system shuts down.
📌 Why is it important to know this?
This knowledge is needed not to slap on a label or find an excuse.
By understanding the mechanisms of our neurobiology, we stop seeing ourselves as “lost causes.” We reclaim authorship of our lives. Real change can begin only from a place of acceptance (without self-flagellation).
In the next posts, I will break down the mechanics of each condition: from neurobiology to specific self-help tools.
